Peg Jump Puzzle | Classic Golf Tee Game

If you can already clear the golf tee game down to one peg, Peg Jump 6 is the step up: a wooden triangle peg game with 21 holes in 6 rows instead of the usual 15. It is an advanced 6-wide peg jump puzzle for fans of peg solitaire and tricky triangle puzzles, made in our family workshop in Hudson, Florida by Creative Crafthouse, the wooden puzzle and game company our family started in 2003.

Almost every triangle peg game you will find, from the cheap wooden-block boards played with golf tees to the boutique wooden ones, is the 15-hole size you start with 14 pegs on. Peg Jump 6 adds a sixth row, so you start with 20 pegs, and those extra jumps leave far more ways for the last few pegs to get stranded. That is the whole appeal for anyone who has the small board figured out. One customer wrote, "Well made and attractive and husband loves the puzzle's challenge." Another simply called it "very challenging."

To play, fill every hole but one. Jump a peg over its neighbor, along any row or diagonal, into an empty hole, then lift off the peg you jumped. Keep going until no jumps are left; the goal is to finish with one peg. Any of the 21 holes can be your starting gap, and every one of them can be solved down to a single peg, so there is plenty left to work through after your first win. For a different goal, try to strand 12 pegs, the most this board allows. Our instruction sheet counts that as a goal of its own, and it is at least as hard to find as the one-peg finish.

The cherry wood lid is the game board, laser etched with the Peg Jump 6 name and the lines that connect its 21 holes. Slide the lid off sideways and the pegs store in the finger-jointed box underneath, which we make from floorboard material for strength and durability. With the lid on, Peg Jump 6 measures 4 x 3.5 x 1.75 inches. That is smaller than many 15-hole boards and easy to hold in one hand, so it rides along on road trips and stays out on a desk or coffee table, but check the size if you are picturing a large board. In the box you get the cherry board and its storage box, 21 cribbage-style pegs, not golf tees, each 1 1/4 inches tall (20 to play plus a spare; colors may vary), and a printed instruction and solution sheet, so nobody stays stuck for good.

We have sold Peg Jump 6 since 2015, but the game is far older: the first known printed mention of peg solitaire is in a French magazine from 1697, and peg solitaire on a triangular grid goes back at least to an 1891 US patent. It is a one-player puzzle that still gets passed around the table, a great white elephant gift and a good addition to game night. As a Christmas, Father's Day, Mother's Day or birthday gift, it suits anyone in the family who has the golf tee game memorized, and it fits in a stocking.
